My experience
A few weeks ago, I emailed through to reception to arrange an appointment to remove a 14 year old wired retainer.
I was under the impression that the removal of my ‘permanent’ retainer wire (which broke at the start of lockdown, conveniently) would be free, with the *option* to have a plastic removable retainer at the sum of £95 per set *if* I wished to have one.
(Email excerpt from reception:
“As you had the bonded retainer done here, there would be no charge to remove it.
You may however wish to have a new retainer made after the removal to keep the teeth in place which would cost £95 per arch.” Note - the implied nature of free will)
I don’t live close to MK so have booked the day off work to attend the appointment - something I didn’t mind doing in the first instance.
Up to this point everything was absolutely fine.
I arrived for my appointment - I spoke with the orthodontist and went through everything with her.
She explained that I was “strongly advised” to purchase a set of removable removable retainers after the removal of the wire. (That “free will” I mentioned earlier? Starting to feel more forced, now)
Absolutely fine; however after treating myself to a new phone earlier in the month I couldn’t afford the £190 required, so asked if it could be removed today, and sort the retainer out at a later date after my next pay day.
“Oh that’s absolutely fine - speak to reception on the way out”.
Off comes the PPE from both orthodontist and dental nurse as she turned to the computer, essentially dismissing me. I hadn’t said that I didn’t want the retainer removed.
I feel as though I had an uphill battle to get the retainer removed.
I had to plea my case that I don’t live close to the surgery, had taken annual leave and would rebook if I felt it were necessary; I even stated that I understood that my teeth could move in future without a retainer brace and that it were a risk I am willing to take.
What I thought would be a simple appointment had turned far more frustrating!
Thankfully from this point the wire was removed at no cost.
Whether it was all a massive misunderstanding I don’t know… However, I was under the impression that my intention was clear - I asked for my brace to be removed during the appointment, and wished to sort a removable retainer at a later date. Simple, no?
I left the practice feeling really quite vexed and felt that I had been mis-sold a free service, which is a real shame as you until now I could not fault the service given.
Sadly, to make matters worse I’ve returned home to find I still have uneven adhesive still on my teeth where the bonded retainer was.
I’m hopeful that my dentist will be willing to remove this as, at present, I cannot face returning to Teeth-in-line, and would rather keep my annual leave for things I actually enjoy!

Hi Sam
We are sorry to hear you were unhappy about your recent visit to Teethinline.
Just to reassure you, whenever we remove a Bonded Retainer, our team would always strongly recommend you have a removable retainer made at the same time. As you know, the bonded retainer is designed to hold the alignment achieved and as soon as it is removed, there is a strong potential for relapse. We are sorry if you felt pressured as this was not our intention at all - We are passionate about what we do and really would not want you to lose all the investment and hard work put into aligning your teeth. Our Therapist thought you might want to keep your Bonded Retainer until you could have removable retainers made but once she had made you aware of the risks and you decided to go ahead, the Therapist did fulfil your request. Her efforts really did have your best interests at heart but we are sorry if you felt this was not the case.
Thank you for your feedback and giving us the opportunity to explain things more clearly. Please get back in touch as soon as you are ready to have removable retainers made. We hope to see you soon.
