My latest visit was very odd. I was booked in for the dental hygienist who, when looking at my records, advised she couldn't treat me without written permission from my hospital clinician as I'm on immunosuppressants. Whilst I appreciate her honesty, I updated my records stating I was on immunosuppressants months ago so shouldn't have been able to book a hygiene appointment. As it was I took an afternoon off work which was wasted. I've had a dental appointment in that time so have been able to have some treatment.

We appreciate the frustration caused by attending an appointment that could not proceed. While our reception team records and updates medical histories, they are not clinically trained to assess whether a particular medication or medical condition makes a patient suitable for invasive periodontal treatment. It would therefore be inappropriate and potentially unsafe for non-clinical staff to make those decisions at the point of booking.
The hygienist acted appropriately by reviewing the medical history before treatment and identifying that further clarification from the patient's hospital clinician was required to ensure care could be provided safely.
We are always looking for ways to improve our processes and will review whether additional pre-appointment clinical screening by the treating clinician is feasible. However, this is not always possible, and in many cases patients may also have experienced changes to their medical history that have not yet been communicated to the practice.
