Different Dentists have prefered methods of carrying out examinations- i.e some are more verbal than others. However, please rest assured that your teeth and gums are thoroughly checked along with an oral cancer screening-These are fundamental requirements of ALL examinations.

As part of your examination, the Dentist will take routine X-rays (if necessary) and assess your need for a scale and polish resulting in 3 possible outcomes:
1. It may not be deemed necessary
2. If it is deemed necessary, the Dentist may provide this under the NHS band 1 charge of £27.40
3. If a band 1 scale and polish is deemed insufficient treatment to manage your gum health the Dentist will refer you to the hygienist who has the necessary skills and clinical time to provide this service. This will include more detailed assessments including a 6-point pocket charting, plaque and inflammation scoring. These assessments may potentially identify the need for further treatment including “deep cleaning” usually carried out under Local Anaesthetic. This appointment and any further appointments are included in NHS band 2 charge of £75.30 (minus the £27.40 already paid for the examination)

It has always been at the individual Dentists discretion as to whether a scale and polish is provided as part of an NHS examination. Due to the ever-increasing pressure on NHS Dentistry, many Dentists prioritise clinical time for more extensive treatments to manage their time more effectively. If your Dentist feels you would benefit from any form of hygiene therapy, they will most likely refer you to one of our Hygienists who has the appropriate amount of clinical time to manage your care. I am not at liberty to discuss a patient’s dental history on a public platform but obviously referral was deemed appropriate in this instance. Ultimately the decision whether to proceed with the proposed treatment plan is the responsibility of the patient.

We also offer the option to spread the cost of routine dental care through a Dental Plan which offers interest free monthly payments tailored to suit your dental needs plus additional discounts on treatments and additional health packages. Whilst we do endeavour to see our patients at their scheduled appointment time, unfortunately occasional delays due to treatments not going to plan or emergencies are inevitable and unavoidable.

I would advise any patients who have been kept waiting significantly longer than their scheduled time to ask at reception for an update.
