I had an appointment today with Nadia. As someone who hasn’t seen a dentist for about 15 years I was a bit nervous however I needed have been, she explained everything she was doing before she did anything. Both Nadia and the nurse were really chatty and friendly. The room doesn’t have that typical clinical smell either which makes a pleasant change. Plus as a wheelchair user and someone with limited mobility they were both patient and offered assistance. Overall a very comfortable and pleasant experience.

My experience
Didn’t actually get to my appointment! Had gone in a lot earlier than appointment time, one of the first few appointment times and had explained that I needed to be out on time as had an appointment else where. 15 mins after my time, still not gone in, so unfortunately had to leave. If I had been 15 mins late to my appointment, they wouldn’t have allowed me in so why is it ok when it’s the other way round? I have never been in at my allocated time whenever I have had an appointment. Whilst sat there others who had come to see another dentist were getting to go in before the time they had been booked for!

My experience
I came in for a check up today. Receptionists are as lovely as always and the surgery is a nice clean bright space.
Ever an issue though, I am autistic and explained to the dentist I use a three sided toothbrush. He told me it's not good enough and I should change to a "normal one". I feel like I've worked really hard finding a way to even be able to brush my teeth twice a day, and him saying "No, use a different brush" might actually mean I can't brush my teeth for several days.
I think the dentists should really look to understand sensory differences and the lived experience of patients, it is really vital.
I will continue using my three sided brush because brushing with that is better than not brushing at all. But I'm headstrong enough to think like that, whereas others won't be. Their off hand remarks could be causing long term harm.
