Difficulty making an appointment
This is a review for Somerstown Surgery
I found the whole process of making an appointment extremely stressful as I was very worried about my condition. When I called the surgery, urgent appointments were fully booked, and the receptionist couldn't simply book me in for the next available opening, and I was told to phone back the next day. When I went into the surgery to try to speak to someone face-to-face, the receptionist didn't even approach the desk, but waved me away and told me to 'persevere' with phoning. On the following day when I still couldn't get an urgent appointment, I was advised to make an e-consultation, but that too was over subscribed and I had to make three attempts on three different days before I was able to get through. When I finally got an appointment and visited Somerstown Surgery, the waiting room was EMPTY. The system is infuriating and completely dehumanising.

Please be aware that if you consider your medical need 'urgent' that we recommend you call as close to 8.00am as possible. We are an appointment led service and so we do have finite capacity, however the lines are generally open for a good length of time (it can vary daily) before closing so we would stress the need to call early. Waiting rooms are no indicator of work going on at the surgery or indeed any surgery in the UK. Since the pandemic, telephone consultations have increased across the board. There is a lot of telephone / digital work that allows us to increase capacity and do 'more' with the resource we have.

The nurses who treated me were extremely thorough and talked me through the treatment including a Doppler test as well as dressing a leg ulcer. Also talked to me about future treatment.

It is fairly common nationwide that practices are doing more work over the telephone, particularly since the pandemic, as it allows us to deal with 'more' and increase our capacity. Triage nurse was very good but couldn't diagnose the problem. Pain did eventually subside with pain/antiinflammatories so it could have been a muscular problem. Hopefully it doesn't reoccur.

I was given a steroid injection in my hip which unfortunately had no impact on my pain. I know this can happen and I was simply one of the negative results. However the surgery immediately sent a letter to QAH Orthopaedics to have my appointment brought forward because of the severity of my pain. I’m still waiting to hear from orthopaedics but I can’t fault Cosham Park House Surgery.

Thank you for your feedback. We cannot hold stocks of dressings etc. however we do have first aid kit for staff and though it is not typical, could have perhaps been made available to you.

I have been asked by the surgery to do an Econsult, I have been trying for weeks. Whenever I try at the right time it says it's closed and will reopen the following day. I'm presuming they are filled up already. So now the doctor is refusing to prescribe my Mirtazapine which I take for depression and anxiety. Trying to do this Econsult is making my anxiety worse. I am in counselling and will have to mention this at my next appointment.

Thank you for your feedback. eConsult is very popular and, as with all our services, we have finite capacity and so it does close when that capacity has been met. If you have been sent a link to the correct form, that will help but it does need to be accessed 'promptly' at 6.30pm (not before). You can telephone the prescription team between 10am and 1pm on Option 3 and see if there are medication review appointments available to maintain your prescribed medications. We do typically advise when medication reviews are due in good time to arrange this, we are sorry to hear that it has affected your supply.

Came in because of my tonsil
This is a review for Kingston Crescent Surgery
I came in because of my tonsils as one is bigger than the other and has a yellow patch on it. I was told I had a tonsil stone however the discolouration is on the skin of the tonsil not a stone lodged in. I know this as I’ve previously had tonsil stones so I know the difference. Also I saw a nurse not a doctor which could be why they didn’t know anything.

Thank you for your feedback. We have 6 in-house clinical pharmacists and 4 pharmacy technicians who are mainly based at our Cosham site, we are also currently recruiting a further pharmacy technician. The Pharmacy attached to sites are not staffed by us.
