I go to Heyward Road Surgery to get help on managing my Diabetes, seeing a doctor etc... Because I'm in very good health for my age, I only need to visit Heyward Road Surgery once a month, always in the afternoon (14:00 hours onwards), so, with the above in mind, I have drawn the following conclusions.
Heyward Road Surgery, when I visit it, is always clean, and I'm given a warm welcome by the receptionist.
I assume, because of Covid, the Surgery manage the appointment schedules so there is never more than two people at a time, waiting in the small reception area, which, in my opinion is excellent.
The help and advice I have been given from the staff (Doctors. Nurses. Receptionist etc) working in the surgery (not over the phone) has been excellent, and I believe that the decisions made by the Doctors, Nurses, receptionist etc, are more accurate because you, the patient, are right in front of the person who is trying to help you, and can physically show, or tell the Doctor/Nurse/receptionist etc what is wrong ( the third dimension which technology cannot cater for)
In my opinion, Heyward Road Surgery is very good, but improvements can be made in other areas. These areas are identified in other parts of this review.

Thank you for your feedback. We have invested significantly in our telephone system, which attempts to match capacity with patient demand at all times. There are times of day, however, which are busier than others and, during these times, it will be more difficult to get through. We do constantly monitor the situation and, if indicated, make further investment in our communications infrastructure.

I have tried multiple times to be seen by a doctor but I'm always met by the receptionist asking questions that I don't feel comfortable asking. To then be told I have to ring back as all the appointments are gone or to try book online, where the only options are with a hcsw. I don't often ask to see a doctor so when I do, I have tried other avenues first. The lack of appointments are worrying.

Thank you for your feedback. Our contact centre is compromised of trained care navigators who have been fully trained to ensure you are put in touch with the most appropriate member of the team. Our GP Partners have asked our care navigators to ask specific questions as part of this protocol.

We have had online appointments available, and booked by patient's online; they are limited, as we are an appointment led service.

We do regularly review our appointments and try to maximise capacity where we can. Contractually we are required to offer 72 appointments per 1000 patients. We are often providing 90/100+. We do accept that GP demand is high which is why we care navigate to ensure they are used appropriately.

We are also reviewing our allocations of GP appointment (urgent / routine etc) to try and see if we can make improvements there. Please don't forget we also offer eConsult too, via our website.

Blood test and B12 jab went well. Two days later I got a message asking me to make an appointment for a Blood test. Often happens a few days after I've had it. Why can't they combine required test with my routine one so it's all done in one go?

We understand your frustration. Typically 'ad hoc' requests and 'scheduled' requests may go through different teams. however, we have fed this back to the Team Manager to see if there is a way we can ensure this unnecessary duplication is avoided in the future.

After an initial telephone appointment and a prescribed course of antibiotics, I called again a week later and was offered a face to face appointment for my problem because it had not improved.
I saw a medical professional who was a specialist in what I was suffering from and dealt with it quickly and efficiently.
I see lots of reviews on here, complaining about the Practice. Personally, I think the practice is well run and I have always been offered an appointment with a relevant medical professional for the condition I am phoning for. This is NOT always a Doctor, nor should it be. We should accept appointments for the best medical professional for our condition at the time and this surgery has employed lots of specialist in different fields.
The Care Navigators are also highly trained individuals and I have always found them exceptionally polite, knowledgeable and helpful.

Outcome satisfied but very disappointed with actually getting through on the phone and being cut off after waiting 8 in line then 23 in line then being told to E consult which I did, told reply within 2 days then told within 10 days for a reply.
So disjointed system decided after 6 months to change practice with frustration in actually getting an appt, also getting further medication review, have wasted hours on your system and told you several times that it is not easy, also not everybody is computer aware leading to people not following up illnesses when they should as the whole system is broken and needs to be overhauled and streamlined.
The treatment from the doctors is fine but getting to that point proves impossible, new is not better!

Thank you for your review. We urge you to contact our team on 023 92 62 7765 so we can investigate the call cut off. This should not happen and we are not aware of any instances. Without times, numbers used and details unfortunately we cannot escalate it to our phone provider for investigation.

It would also be helpful for you to provide us with eConsult information. The automated response we have no control over, will advise contact by the next working day - but within this time you should receive a text with an estimated timescale. We have been turning them round consistently within 5 working days for several weeks, so again 10 working days is unusual. In order to investigate we need your details and you can provide that on the number above. We have recently had an instance where eConsult added some forms that were available 24/7 without our knowledge - this did adversely impact our turnaround but not to this extent. Fortunately the functionality has been paused whilst we find a working process.

Waiting room empty for the 5 mins I was waiting. Reception helpful with my inquiry. Blood tests carried out efficiently and well, although original reason for the tests (given 4 weeks earlier on the phone) was not correct.....this is the reason for the 2 star rating below in respect to ".....GP practice involves you in decisions...." Nurse helpful with an inquiry I had during the blood test.
