The best nurse I have had yet

The diabetic nurse Nicky was so helpful in explaining to me about my condition as experiencing high blood sugars at the moment. I feel she really cared and explained my new medication and how we can move forward in getting my sugars down. I was diagnosed in 2012 and she was the best nurse I have had yet.

While I do appreciate how busy you all are in these difficult times, I find it impossible to get an appointment with a doctor here anymore. How you can diagnose somebody over the phone without even seeing them is beyond me. Ok some things would be obvious I suppose, but I've had a lump on my arm for a while that has never bothered me. Recently it's started growing and is a lot more noticeable and is bothering me somewhat. Doctor called, sounded miserable as sin, to the point I actually felt like I was imposing on his day and wasting his time, and he told me over the phone what he reckons it is. The lump has grown a bit since and I'm quite worried about it but also worried about calling the surgery back about it.

Please do not feel worried about contacting us. We are doing more work over the phone, as are others - but we do bring patients in when we feel it necessary. You can also use our econsult service where you can send in pictures - that might further assist in the consultation.

Thank you for the feedback and we are pleased to hear that you find our surgery to be a friendly and welcoming environment. I'm quite confident the phone line isn't always busy - it is of course very busy at certain times of the day, and whilst we do direct additional resource for these known peaks in demand - we inevitably do find some people have to try a few times to get through. We understand from previous surveys that people would rather try a few times to connect and be dealt with fairly quickly, than sit in a phone queue for an extended period of time - however we do ask that question regularly and will look at changing things if general opinion changes!

Thank you for your feedback. With the ever-increasing demands on our services, it is simply not possible or, indeed, appropriate for all our patients to see a GP, particularly for urgent problems. All of our Nurse Practitioners and Paramedic Practitioners are fully clinically trained and supported by an on-site duty doctor if they need any assistance whatsoever.

Also I booked a flu jab, having read that I could get one in November (I'm 63). I checked with the receptionist and was told to attend, only to be refused by the nurse that called me in. I had problems getting an appointment even after a doctor told me I needed to attend the surgery, was told by the same doctor that Somerstown surgery was shut.

Thank you for the feedback and apologies for the confusion you have recently had over the flu jab. We were advised that we could vaccinate patients aged 50-64 (who were not previously eligible) from 1/12/20 - but the national press did announce this a little prior to that date and we did unfortunately have some patients being booked in and attending prior to us being able to do so. We are so sorry that you were affected by this; we did try to rectify the situation as soon as it came to light.

We can also assure you that Somerstown surgery is open - we endeavour to offer services at all of our sites, but sometimes it may be more appropriate for an appointment to be attended at another one of our surgeries. Once again, apologies for any confusion called when this message was relayed.

This practice has gone downhill since 2017. Trying to get an appointment, nightmare. Getting new prescriptions sorted, nightmare. Reception staff- great.

Thank you for your feedback. We have made many changes since 2017 and we hope that they are all for the better, once we have resolved the initial, sometimes inevitable, teething issues. We have consolidated our telephone lines into a contact centre and introduced a prescription hub - sot hat we can ensure appropriate resource at all times. The centre and hub are manned, in the main, by our great reception staff - and overseen by trained clinicians and personnel where appropriate. Please do contact the Operations team if you continue to have issues and we will hopefully be able to resolve them with you.

Thank you for the feedback. We do encourage patients to contact us via digital means to avoid footfall at this time, due to COVID. However we realise this is not appropriate to all and we do assist patients who attend our sites. This can take time but we would rather cover all in one contact rather than have patients feel they need to come back. We do have a limited resource of reception staff and we regularly review where they are directed to, to ensure most suitable use. Unfortunately, we have also experienced high staff absences, mainly due to COVID - and this has impacted on our staff availability but we thank you for your patience and feedback.
